A Comprehensive Review of Sustainable Inventory Models under Carbon Emission Regulations Polices

Abstract

The increasing urgency to combat climate change has led to the widespread implementation of carbon emission regulations across global industries. In response, sustainable inventory management has emerged as a critical area of research, integrating environmental concerns with traditional cost optimization. This paper presents a comprehensive review of sustainable inventory models developed under various carbon emission regulatory frameworks, including carbon tax, cap-and-trade, and carbon offset mechanisms. We categorize and analyze the existing literature based on key modeling approaches, policy integration strategies, and sustainability performance metrics. The review highlights the evolution from classical economic order quantity (EOQ) models to more sophisticated multi-echelon, stochastic, and fuzzy-based systems that incorporate carbon constraints. Furthermore, the study explores how hybrid approaches, such as green technology investment and renewable energy utilization, enhance the environmental and economic performance of supply chains. Key research gaps and future directions are identified, particularly the need for real-time data-driven models, multi-criteria optimization, and alignment with global sustainability goals. This review aims to serve as a foundational reference for researchers and practitioners seeking to develop environmentally responsible and economically viable inventory systems in the era of carbon regulation.
